TasALERT App
Empowering Tasmanians with Real-Time Emergency Alerts
When the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Tas) set out to extend the reach of TasALERT with a mobile app, we were delighted to bring our expertise to the table. Following our success with the TasALERT website, we worked closely with the department over the past year to develop a new companion TasALERT app, specifically designed to provide on-the-go access to emergency information and real-time notifications for Tasmanians. The result was an intuitive, robust, and responsive mobile solution that allows users to stay informed and prepared wherever they are.
Project Overview
The TasALERT app was launched with the goal of giving users direct access to timely, location-specific updates on emergencies and weather conditions. Designed with user experience at its core, the app features a sleek interface and improved functionality over the website. Working alongside our amazing clients from the Department of Premier and Cabinet, our team was focused on providing a seamless, accessible solution that Tasmanians could rely on in times of crisis.
Key Features
Watch Zone Notifications: One of the standout features of the app is the ability to create “Watch Zones” for specific locations. Users can set up notifications for areas beyond their immediate surroundings, such as a loved one’s home, a workplace, or children’s school, receiving alerts if emergencies arise in those areas. This personalized feature provides peace of mind, empowering Tasmanians to stay informed about locations that matter most to them.
Real-Time Alerts and Warnings: The app leverages real-time data integration to send immediate notifications for incidents like severe weather events, bushfires, and other emergencies. When critical updates are published, users receive push notifications, ensuring they are always connected to the latest information without needing to constantly check the app.
User-Friendly Design: The TasALERT app was built with accessibility and usability in mind. Designed to be intuitive, the app allows users of all ages to quickly navigate through alerts, weather updates, and emergency guidelines. Feedback from early users praised the simplicity and clarity of the app, making it a vital tool in Tasmania’s emergency response ecosystem.
“The TasALERT App truly is a one-stop shop for preparing for, responding to and recovering from an emergency in Tasmania and is another step towards building a more resilient Tasmania,"
Australia's #1 ranked news app
Since its launch, the TasALERT app has seen remarkable success and user engagement:
Within days, it became the #1 news app in Australia, with over 15,000 downloads in the first few days alone.
By week four, the app had surpassed 50,000 downloads and remains one of Australia’s top-ranked news apps, demonstrating its utility and relevance.
Local media coverage and a series of extreme weather events highlighted the app’s importance, and feedback from the community reflected the appreciation for timely and accessible emergency updates.
The TasALERT app's impact extends beyond download numbers; it has become a critical tool for community safety. With Tasmania's unpredictable weather and terrain, having a reliable, real-time information source that is easily accessible has transformed how residents and emergency personnel respond to local incidents. Through close collaboration and the hard work of both the our team and the Resilience and Recovery Tasmania unit, the TasALERT app has become a trusted companion for Tasmanians.
The app exemplifies our commitment to delivering digital solutions that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Working alongside our dedicated partners at the Department of Premier and Cabinet, we’re proud to see the app’s positive impact on communities across Tasmania. With this project, we continue to support community resilience, safety, and accessibility through technology.
