Accela Research is charting a new course in the rapidly evolving space of climate transition intelligence for institutional investors. Specialising in analysing the sustainability commitments and financial performance of major energy companies, Accela represents the new generation of fintech companies addressing the urgent need for transparent, actionable climate data in investment decision-making.
The Accela Investor Portal represents a successful collaboration between a dynamic fintech start-up and digital innovation expertise, creating the first implementation of a platform that transforms complex climate research into accessible, actionable intelligence for institutional investors. The co-design process proved essential in helping Accela establish their market position whilst creating a platform that serves their unique analytical strengths.

The Challenge
Institutional investors are struggling to evaluate energy companies' genuine commitment to climate transition beyond corporate rhetoric. Despite an abundance of sustainability reports and climate pledges, investors lack analytical tools to meaningfully compare performance across companies or identify disconnects between public commitments and actual financial allocations.
The market need was urgent as investors faced growing pressure to align portfolios with net-zero targets, but conventional ESG ratings proved insufficient. Accela identified that investors required not just data, but actionable intelligence that could directly inform engagement strategies with energy companies during critical periods like AGM season.
As a start-up entering the competitive climate intelligence market, Accela approached us with a vision to create their first digital platform that would establish their market presence and showcase their unique analytical insights. The challenge was to co-design a comprehensive investor portal that would transform complex climate data into intuitive, decision-ready insights whilst enabling comparative analysis across major oil and gas companies.
The platform needed to provide engagement tools with targeted questions for investor meetings while supporting a freemium business model to maximise user adoption. Technical requirements included seamless integration with Accela's existing data models and a strategic launch timeline to coincide with the 2025 AGM season.


Our Solution
Working closely with Accela's team in a collaborative co-design process, we developed a sophisticated web platform that would serve as the start-up's flagship digital presence. This first implementation of their Investor Portal combines data visualisation, comparative analysis, and strategic intelligence into a cohesive user experience designed specifically for institutional investors, showcasing Accela's unique insights and analytical capabilities.
The platform integrates with Accela's custom data models to access bespoke research data, transforming complex datasets into interactive visualisations with consistent colour coding across metrics. The information architecture employs a sector-first approach, allowing users to quickly navigate from broad comparisons to detailed company profiles through the prominent "Leader Table" that presents colour-coded performance rankings.
Key features include the Oil and Gas Sector Comparison tool enabling side-by-side evaluation of companies including TotalEnergies, Eni, Shell, BP, and Equinor across multiple performance indicators. Individual company pages balance comprehensive metrics with strategic analysis, whilst "Our Take" sections decode corporate strategy shifts and "Engagement Asks" provide ready-to-use questions for investor meetings.
Development Process
The project followed a collaborative co-design approach that proved essential for a start-up entering a competitive market with their first digital platform. Comprehensive stakeholder workshops helped define not only user personas and key use cases, but also Accela's brand positioning and market differentiation strategy.
Iterative wireframing and prototyping sessions with Accela's team ensured the information architecture would support efficient decision-making workflows. User testing with actual institutional investors validated design choices, whilst agile development sprints enabled regular feedback and iterations with particular attention to data security, performance optimisation, and integration reliability.
The platform incorporates a freemium model designed to maximise user engagement while supporting Accela's business objectives. The free tier provides access to key comparative data, enabling users to experience the platform's value, whilst premium insights remain reserved for deeper engagement tools and proprietary research.
